Like most corporate success stories, Domino’s started out small – with just one store in 1960. However, in 1978, the 200th Domino’s store opened, and things began to cook. By 1983, there were 1,000 Domino’s stores and 5,000 in 1989. Today, there are over 17,100 stores – including more than 10,000 outside the US.
Two brothers Tom and James Monaghan purchased ‘DomiNick’s pizza store in Michigan from borrowed money. However, a year later, James traded his 50% share in the business for a Volkswagen Beetle, leaving Tom the sole owner. In 1965, Tom renamed the store to “Domino’s Pizza Inc.”. By 1983, Domino’s had 1000 stores and it slowly started opening shop in other countries as well and by 1989, it had 5,000 stores. It also started rolling out new products such as Pan Pizza, Thin Crust Pizza, Bread Sticks, Buffalo Wings, flavored crusts, etc.. In 1998, Tom sold 93 percent of the company to Bain Capital Inc. for about $1 billion. A year later, the company named Dave Brandon as its CEO.
Domino’s today has over 17,000 stores across more than 90 countries with retail sales of $14.3 billion, many products on its menu, and is known for its best pizza delivery service across the globe. More than half of Domino’s sales now come from outside the U.S. More than 94% of Domino’s stores in the U.S. are franchise-owned. Domino’s has about 770 independent franchise owners in the U.S and more than 95% started their careers as drivers, pizza makers, or hourly workers.
