Children First asked Dr. Shikha Mahajan, one of the best pediatricians in Delhi, some of these questions. Dr. Shikha Mahajan is Consultant Pediatrician & Adolescent Health Specialist & Associate Director with BLK Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi. She has over 22 years of experience in pediatrics. So here are a few of the questions we asked her…

1. What precautions should I take during COVID Pandemic?
It is very important to keep yourself and your family members safe during this pandemic. Wear a mask, wash your hands frequently, and maintain a safe distance of 6 feet. Avoid touching your face and mouth with your hands. Avoid going to crowded places. Keep your home well-ventilated.

2. When all is it important for me to wear a mask? What kind of mask should I wear?
You have to wear a face mask whenever you step out of your home. Also, when someone visits your place (electrician, plumber, technician, or house help), it is important to wear a mask and maintain a social distance of 6 feet.
Any good cloth mask or simple surgical mask is good enough. However, it is very important to wear the mask properly, covering the bridge of your nose till your chin. Make sure it is a proper-fitting mask.

3. What is good mask hygiene?
Simply wearing a mask is not enough. Avoid touching your mask while wearing it. Once you take it off, keep it in a safe, dry place (paper bag or box) and wash your hands thoroughly. Change your mask if it is damaged or wet. In case of a cloth mask, wash it daily and dry it under the sun.

4. Can I go out for a walk in the evening for some time?
Yes, you may go for a walk. Choose a time when fewer people are outside – early morning or late evening. Avoid crowds. Wear a mask and maintain social distance.

5. What kind of activities/schedule do you suggest for us during lockdown which will help us to stay physically and mentally healthy?
First and foremost, try to follow a regular schedule for your daily activities. Wake up and sleep at a fixed time. Have your meals on time. Follow the routine for your study and leisure activities. Help in household chores. Clean your room and rearrange your almirahs. Give away things which you have not used for last the 2 years. Walk in the house and keep a count of your steps. It will keep you motivated to walk more. If you have a terrace, go for a stroll on the terrace. Start a new hobby – gardening, music, reading, etc. Lastly, put on some good music and dance your blues away.

6. What do you suggest for immunity boosting during COVID times?
Nothing has been proven or approved for boosting immunity. Eat regular, healthy, home-cooked meals. Avoid excess salt and sugar. Avoid caffeinated drinks. Keep yourself well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water, buttermilk, lemon water, coconut water. Avoid juices.

7. How much of the screen time is good for us per day? Screen time is becoming more and more important with online learning. My source of entertainment and interaction has also become digital. But my parents ask me not to be onscreen. What do I do?
Screen time should not exceed more than 2 hours per day. Excess of screen time is causing various physical and mental issues. It is better to interact and communicate verbally rather than chatting digitally. Stop living in a virtual world. Next time, when one of your friends or family members has a birthday, call them and wish them instead of texting a message. Try it and feel the difference!
